Chewning was appointed the settlement's first postmaster that June. Accounts differ on exactly which Tucker the town was named for; some point to Rufus S. Tucker, a director and major shareholder in several Seaboard system railroads, while an early local history instead credits an unnamed "Capt. Tucker" who worked for the line. Either way, the depot anchored the young community for decades, carrying passengers and mail until the Great Depression and the decline of passenger rail took their toll; the building still stands today, used as a CSX field office. Tucker remained an unincorporated DeKalb County community for more than a century afterward, until a grassroots campaign built around the Tucker 2015 organization put cityhood to a vote. Voters approved incorporation in November 2015 by nearly a three-to-one margin, Frank Auman was elected the city's first mayor, and Tucker began operating as an independent city in late August 2016.

A Working Main Street

Downtown Tucker's commercial buildings reflect its railroad-town roots. Cofer Bros. hardware store opened on Main Street in 1919 and remained a local fixture for generations, and Matthews Cafeteria, open since 1955, has served the same stretch of Main Street even longer than the city itself has existed. Around that historic core, Tucker's residential streets mix post-war brick ranch homes with newer traditional and craftsman-style construction built as older lots have turned over, giving the city a range of home styles that spans most of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first.
