From Farming Community to Newest City

The community now known as Dunwoody dates to the early 1830s and takes its name from Major Charles Archibald Dunwody, whose family also helped establish mills in nearby Roswell. Local histories differ on exactly how an extra "o" found its way into the family name, but by the time a post office was established for the community in 1881, the spelling "Dunwoody" had already stuck. Despite that long history, Dunwoody didn't become its own city until December 1, 2008, following a three-year push by the citizens' group Citizens for Dunwoody, a July 2008 referendum, and enabling legislation signed by Governor Sonny Perdue.

Dunwoody Village and a Range of Homes

Dunwoody Village, the community's historic commercial core, grew up around a Colonial Williamsburg-style shopping center built in the 1970s, and its look still defines the district today. At its corner stands the Cheek-Spruill Farmhouse, built in 1906 and later run as a working produce farm by the Spruill family beginning in 1945. The Dunwoody Preservation Trust saved the house from demolition in the 1990s, restored it, and now maintains it as a community gathering place with a History Room open to the public. Dunwoody's neighborhoods offer a range of home styles, from established ranch and traditional houses built as the area suburbanized in the mid-20th century to high-rise and mid-rise condominiums near Perimeter Center, where offices and residences have grown up together since Perimeter Mall opened in 1971.

Brook Run Park and the Nature Center

Brook Run Park, Dunwoody's largest park at 103 acres on North Peachtree Road, includes wooded walking trails, a skate park, a dog park, a Veterans Memorial, and a community garden. The property was once the campus of a state residential institution that closed in the 1990s as care approaches shifted nationally, and DeKalb County acquired the land in 1997 to redevelop it into the park in use today. Elsewhere in the city, the 22-acre Dunwoody Nature Center offers forested trails and a playground with no admission fee, along with nature education programming, and the Spruill Center for the Arts provides gallery and studio space near the Village.

Getting Around Dunwoody

I-285 and Georgia 400 both touch Dunwoody, and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Chamblee-Dunwoody Road, and Mount Vernon Road serve as the main local routes connecting its neighborhoods to Perimeter Center and Dunwoody Village. MARTA's Dunwoody rail station, on the north side of the city near Perimeter Mall, provides direct rail access into Atlanta, and a growing network of sidewalks and multi-use paths links neighborhoods to Brook Run Park and other destinations around the city.

Shopping and Dining at Perimeter Center

Perimeter Mall and the surrounding Perimeter Center district make up one of the region's largest concentrations of shopping, dining, and office space, anchored by department stores and national retailers along with a wide range of restaurants. Dunwoody Village offers a smaller-scale, walkable alternative with local shops and restaurants, and High Street, a newer mixed-use development near Perimeter Mall, has added additional retail and dining options in recent years.
