A Name Built From Two Cities

Long before it was Dacula, the community went by other names. In the 1800s it was known as Chinquapin Grove, and when railroad crews arrived in the area around 1891, the settlement briefly took the name Hoke. According to local histories, residents later wanted to name the growing town after Dr. John W. Freeman, a physician well regarded in the community, but he declined to have it bear his name outright. Instead, the name Dacula was formed by combining letters from Decatur and Atlanta. The city was incorporated under that name on October 1, 1905.

Railroad Roots and a Cotton Economy

The arrival of the railroad in the early 1890s reshaped the settlement, giving area cotton farmers a way to ship their crops well beyond the immediate area and turning the young town into a small commercial hub. According to local histories, cotton bales piled up so high along the town's streets during harvest season that residents sometimes crossed downtown by walking over them. Passenger and freight rail service continued through Dacula for decades before the local station eventually closed in the 1950s, by which point the town's role as a farming and trading center had long since taken hold.

Much of Dacula's residential growth has come since 2000, as new subdivisions have filled in around the historic downtown and along the GA-316 and Harbins Road corridors, including the Hamilton Mill area on the city's edge, long known for its golf course community. Population figures reflect that pace of change, with the 2020 census counting 6,882 residents and more recent estimates putting the number above 9,300. The result is a mix of established homes near the old town center and newer traditional style subdivisions built during the area's recent growth, set against a backdrop that still includes working farmland on the city's outer edges.
